Giving Tuesday Update:

Because of your generosity, Blessings in a Backpack raised $8,680 on Giving Tuesday, including matching donations from Thorntons and Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit students also donated full-size cereal boxes for every Blessings child at Field Elementary to take home over winter break.

The need to provide for children becomes even greater as the long holiday break approaches. But because of your support, 80 children at Field Elementary and 100 at Cordia School will feel the joy of the season as they won’t worry about going hungry. Thank you, students, parishioners, Thorntons, and Holy Spirit!

  • Thank you, Thorntons, for donating $2,000 to ensure kids have the fuel they need to live healthy, active lives!
  • Thank you, Holy Spirit, for donating $2,000 so kids know their community is here to love and serve them.

2022-2023 Community Outreach Project

Holy Spirit is continuing its commitment to Blessings in a Backpack a year-long community outreach program supported by the parish and school families. Blessings in a Backpack provides food on the weekends for school-aged children across America who might otherwise go hungry.

The local school we will sponsor this year is Field Elementary, which is less than a mile from Holy Spirit. At Field, 80 children qualify for the Blessings in a Backpack program, and, with our help, every child will leave school on Friday with a backpack full of food!

Join us on Sundays after 10 a.m. mass to pack food for the Field students. Volunteer opportunities are for of all ages, including children. Click here to sign up.

In January 2022, Holy Spirit started the Blessings in a Backpack at Cordia School in Hazard, Kentucky, providing weekend food for 100 children. “Thanks so very much for reaching out to the students of Cordia School,” said FRYSC Director Marlea Cornett. “Many blessings to everyone that helped with this program.”

Because of your generous support, we have the funds to start the 2022–2023 school year by providing Blessings in a Backpack to 80 children at Field Elementary and 100 children at Cordia School.

The total cost to fund both programs, and ensure hunger-free weekends for 180 kids, is $23,400. We are starting the school year with $12,060 in our fund balance; our fundraising goal for this year is $8,440 — $2,900 for Field Elementary and $5,540 for Cordia School.

It takes as little as $130/year to feed one child on the weekends for one school year (38 weekends). You can donate to Blessings in a Backpack by:

  • Making an online donation below.
  • Writing a check payable to Blessings in a Backpack (BE SURE to indicate HOLY SPIRIT in the memo line of the check) and mailing it to:
    Blessings in Backpack
    P.O. Box 950291

  • Creating a Facebook Fundraiser. BE SURE to indicate Field Elementary or Cordia School in the title so the funds will be restricted to the program.
