2021-22 Community Outreach Project

Holy Spirit has committed to a first-time year-long community outreach program.  Both the parish and school families will be supporting the outreach program Blessings in a Backpack.  This program provides food on the weekends for elementary children in schools across America who might otherwise go hungry.

The local school we will sponsor, Dunn Elementary, has many children who qualify for the Blessings in a Backpack program but, without our help, can only feed a small percentage of the children in need.  With our help, every child in that school, who qualifies, will get food for the weekend from Blessings in a Backpack.  It takes $120.00/year to send each child home with a food backpack every weekend (38).  There are 150 children at Dunn that qualify for the program bringing our goal to $18,000.00.  We are starting the fundraising part of our commitment this summer in order to get a good foundation for the funds needed to purchase the non-perishable food that will be packed by parish and school volunteers during the school year.  You can donate to Blessings in a Backpack by either:

  1. clicking the link below to make a payment or
  2. writing a check payable to Blessings in a Backpack (BE SURE to indicate HOLY SPIRIT in the memo line of the check) and mail it to:

Parish and school combined volunteer efforts will begin in August.  We have committed to support not only financially but hands-on as well.  There will be two Sundays a month that parish and school families will be able to sign up and volunteer to pack weekend food bags for the children that qualify.  Packing will take place in the Dining Commons, barring any COVID-19 restrictions that may arise.  Much more information will be forthcoming over the summer.  This outreach program will continue throughout the 2021-22 school year.
